SS-31

SS-31 SS-31—also known as elamipretide or MTP-131—is a mitochondria-targeting synthetic tetrapeptide. It preferentially associates with the inner mitochondrial membrane and interacts with cardiolipin, a phospholipid important to mitochondrial membrane structure and energy production. Research has examined SS-31 in relation to electron-transport-chain function, oxidative phosphorylation, ATP production, mitochondrial membrane integrity, reactive oxygen species, and cellular responses to metabolic stress. In September 2025, the FDA granted accelerated approval to a prescription form of elamipretide, marketed as Forzinity, to improve muscle strength in adults and children with Barth syndrome who weigh at least 30 kg. That approval is limited to this specific product, population, and indication. Research-grade SS-31 is not equivalent to Forzinity and is not approved for anti-aging, athletic performance, fatigue, or other mitochondrial conditions.
